In the original 2015 timeline, Martin McFly Jr was arrested for theft of an “undisclosed cash amount” from the Hill Valley Payroll Substation.  The USA Today article says the theft was accomplished with a stolen “degaussing unit”.

Degaussing is the process of removing a magnetic field.  How this could be used to steal money isn’t clear.

Although “degaussing” exists in our 2015 (and did in 1985 as well), there aren’t any “degaussing units” and it’s not immediately clear how such a thing might be used for profit.  Perhaps if there was some magnetic lock, it could be used to open that, but it’s highly unlikely that anyone trying to secure money at a payroll company would rely on magnetic locks alone.
